Thatcher remained intransigient throughout the 1981 hungerstrikes and refused to even recognise the prisoners.Her ruthlessness was said to have been manifested by the fact that her good friend Airey Neave had been executed two years previous to the strike, in a car bomb at the house of commons, by the INLA.The hungerstrike was payback time for Thatcher and her government.
